Ali Pasha Castle
A 19th-century island fortress rising from the sea in Porto Palermo bay โ one of Albania's most dramatic sights.
Ali Pasha Castle is a remarkable triangular fortress built on a tiny island in the sheltered bay of Porto Palermo, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Constructed in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Ioannina โ the powerful and ruthless Ottoman ruler who effectively governed much of what is now Albania and northwestern Greece โ the castle is one of the most dramatically situated fortresses in the entire Mediterranean.
The three-towered fortress rises directly from the sea, its stone walls reflected in the calm, turquoise waters of Porto Palermo bay. The interior contains barracks, cisterns, and a small mosque, and the views from the ramparts across the bay and Ionian Sea are extraordinary.
During the communist era, the castle and surrounding bay were used as a secret submarine base by the Albanian Navy โ a history that adds another fascinating layer to the site.
The surrounding Porto Palermo bay is itself one of the most beautiful anchorages on the Albanian coast, sheltered by mountains and famous for its exceptionally clear water.
