Butrint
Ancient Greek, Roman & Byzantine ruins โ a 2,500-year living history. Just 18 km from Saranda.
Butrint is one of Albania's most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled within a national park on a small peninsula surrounded by Lake Butrint and the Vivari Channel, the ruins span over 2,500 years of continuous habitation.
The site was originally a Greek colony in the 7th century BC, later became a Roman city under Julius Caesar, and flourished through the Byzantine and Venetian eras. Today you can walk through the ancient theatre, the baptistery with its remarkable mosaic floor, the forum, temples, city walls, and the Lion Gate.
The surrounding national park is also a haven for wildlife โ flamingos, pelicans, and sea turtles are commonly spotted in the wetlands.
